Children in Especially Difficult Situations
Children in the red-light area are part of a social structure where
exploitation is common and
prostitution is “normalized”. This is particularly true of
Kamathipura in Mumbai (India), the largest red light area in Asia.
Children are vulnerable to early marriage, exploitation, prostitution, HIV infection and crime. More importantly, they live in fear of losing their mothers - their only support - to AIDS. The program for Children in Especially Difficult Situations addresses
Child Rights and is located in the red light areas of Mumbai.
It targets children in vulnerable situations and at risk to HIV/AIDS. It includes a
day care center for these children, a
night shelter for young boys and girls and
projects for pavement-dwelling migrants.
