Project Saksham (Empowerment)

Goal: To develop an urban, comprehensive community based care program for women and their families infected/affected by HIV/AIDS residing in the city of Mumbai.

This project is intensifying efforts with capacity building and care and support initiatives for PLHA (People Living with HIV/AIDS) women. The project encourages women to attend support group meetings to increase their coping skills and self –esteem. The more articulate and/or active participants are identified and groomed to become outreach workers. They are given intensive training on issues and effective strategies related to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support. They are also motivated to develop their own strengths and self-confidence through skills building exercises and exposure visits. They are guided in undertaking family visits and gradually take over the role of the paraprofessionals in the project to finally empower the PLHA group (s) to take over the project as a community initiative.
