Goal:
To develop a comprehensive model of care in enabling and conductive environment for the overall growth and development of the boys infected/ affected by HIV/AIDS.
|
Aakaar is a home away from home for boys above 10 years of age, infected/ affected by HIV/ AIDS. The word ‘AAKAAR’ is derived from a Sanskrit word ‘AAKRUTI’, which means ‘giving shape’. The project is an expansion of the CIC (Crisis Intervention Centre) program and is need based as more viable options of long term rehabilitation for boys are not available. AAKAAR is designed keeping in mind CCDT’s strong belief that, the ‘family’ is the best place for the overall growth and development of a child. The project ensures that only HIV/ AIDS infected/ affected boys who have no families, extended families or community support or are in risk situations will be admitted.

Aakaar is a residential care and support centre has been set up in Kune (87 km from Mumbai). It consists of six bright and airy rooms and a big hall with gardens for boys. Presently, 20 boys live at Aakaar. With the belief that children are not just passive objects or victims, but are active members of society and they shape their own environment; Aakaar involves children in the planning and implementation of activities and their views are considered seriously. Aakaar is working towards forming a BAL SAMITI (Children’s Committee) where children can have their own forum to participate in the decision making.
