Goal: To provide skills to the community to ensure both new holistic interventions and the continuation in the improvement of overall health, education and economic status of the communities residing in the project areas of Dahisar.

Committed Communities Development Trust’s foremost intervention in 1990 was providing medical services to the residents of two ‘Leprosy Colony’ situated in Borivali, a northern suburb of Mumbai. This was followed by community development interventions.

One of the earliest activities that CCDT conducted was the management of a Municipal Health Post in the northern suburbs. The objective here was to improve service delivery and outreach systems of family planning and Reproductive and Child Health care in the urban slum areas of difficult and unreached municipal wards of Mumbai.

In July 2003, CCDT started IHDP (Integrated Health & Development Programme) in Dahisar; with a focus on creating health awareness, education and economic empowerment. Our strategy was to ensure greater involvement and community participation through the Primary Health and Education Programmes of the Municipal Corporation. Community participation was strengthened by IHDP; which consciously shifted the project’s focus from being centre based to becoming community based. Key active members from the community were identified to take forward various initiatives and create a community ownership of the project.

There is however, a need to provide guidance to the community and strengthen its capacity, enabling it to take the existing initiatives ahead and develop new ones. In 2005, it took a new form. The Community Health and Development Programme (CHDP) has a structured phasing out process.
