The Child Friendly Ward

Goal: To pilot a model to increase access to “child-friendly” care and treatment services through the local government health system.

The Child Friendly Pediatric Ward was started in the Bandra Bhabha Municipal Hospital to provide child friendly care and treatment services through the local government health system. A “Baby- Baba Club” has also been initiated in the hospital premises with the objective to remove the fear of hospitals and to divert children’s minds from their ailments.

The social workers conduct individual and group educational sessions with the parents and care takers of the children. These sessions are on child development issues and HIV at the various hospital wards as well as the Ante Natal Care OPD.

One of the main strategies is to pilot a model that will increase access to the “child friendly” care and treatment services of the local government health system, particularly in the context of HIV/AIDS.

The interventions at the Bandra Bhabha Municipal Hospital include:
Sensitizing the hospital staff through interactive meetings.
Improving the infrastructure of the pediatric ward and OPD.
Counseling & education programmes for the parents and children.
Setting up of the Baby-Baba Club.
Developing IEC material.
