Goal:
To reduce the vulnerability of
boys in Kamathipura to sexual abuse and exploitation and
provide them with options for the future.
CCDT’s
Ankur-Asmita project has been working with children of
women in prostitute since 1993. The project aims to provide children
with options for a viable
future. Some of the boys who have been associated with
the project for a while expressed the need for a night shelter
programme. They felt that the night
shelter will enable them to:
Have a safe space during
the nights when they usually sleep on the streets.
Have an environment
conducive to education as it is impossible for them to study in the
community.
Protect themselves from
sexual abuse and from being forced to participate in activities
associated with
prostitution.
Get adequate sleep and
proper hygiene.
Apart from the above, the
project team also felt that having a shelter
and taking on the responsibility of managing it would help the boys to develop social as well as accounting skills. This
will be extremely helpful when they eventually live independently.
