Goal:
To increase self-reliance and stability in disadvantaged communities
and individuals.
Origin
and objective:
CCDT's
Resource Mobilisation Unit (RMU) was set up in June 2004. Since its
inception, the unit has focused on building the capacity of the
organisation to mobilise funds and local resources.
The primary objective of
this unit is the creation of a corpus that
will provide a safety net for beneficiaries in the future. This corpus
will be utilised for the development of projects, scholarship
programmes and other beneficial purposes. The corpus is the means by
which we can keep our promises to our beneficiaries. It is also a way
to ensure that the organisation is not entirely dependent on external
funding, thereby ensuring self-reliance and sustainability.
Sub-programmes:
| Corporate Social
Responsibility | Volunteer | Income Generation
| Media
|
Corporate
Social Responsibility Programme:
Advocating and networking in order to build long term relationships
with corporates has been an integral aspect of the unit's work in the
last year. We have established important contacts and strengthened the
existing ones. Corporates are not only approached as a means to fund
our projects; they are often a rich source for providing skills and
technical expertise. Volunteers from this sector have been invaluable
in teaching children, creating awareness about the work we do and most
importantly, establishing a desirable nexus between the outside world
and our beneficiaries. Corporates too have felt the benefits of
participating in our programmes and have valued the friendships forged
at CCDT.
Volunteer
Programme: The last year has
seen a huge number of volunteers being welcomed at CCDT. Programmes may
be as short as a month long or as extensive as a year. There are also
volunteers who have been visiting projects for years now and are often
confused with the staff! The RMU manages a well structured programme
wherein volunteers receive an orientation and work plan that suits
both; their and the organisation's needs. Volunteers have provided an
important link to the outside world. They have helped create awareness
about our work and have often helped ease the burden of our over-worked
staff. Some of our partners in this programme are: American Jewish
World Service (AJWS), Alliance of Volunteers for Service, Action and
Reform (AVSAR), iVolunteer, AIESEC and Setem (A Spanish organisation).
Income
Generation
Programme (IGP): The IGP has
grown and blossomed in the last year. From an ad hoc programme that
yielded frugal benefits; today, the IGP is on its way to becoming one
of the keys to a sustainable future for several beneficiaries. The
programme has a long and difficult journey ahead; but the past year has
proven that when beneficiaries are given the option of living an
independent life of dignity; they would much rather work hard and be
self-reliant than be dependent on an institution. The IGP has given
many women a fresh lease of life. The women have been trained with new
skills that they enjoy. They have also been taken to exhibitions where
they market their own products. Self-esteem, confidence and a positive
mind set have all been promoted by the IGP.
Media:
The unit plays an important role in media and press relations. There is
a great deal of sensitization and awareness created among the press
before any event that involves publicity and promotion. In the last
year, it has been observed that the media and other bodies are better
aware of issues such as stigma, discrimination and confidentiality
while working with CCDT. They also seem less prone to misrepresent,
label and sensationalise.
Coordinating fundraising
events or special events such as fashion
shows, screening of films and other activities play an important role
in the work of this unit.
